Minimum Unit Pricing receives Royal Assent

The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018 receives Royal Assent by Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday 9th August.

The new law introduces a minimum price for alcohol in Wales. This is part of the Welsh Government’s wider efforts to reduce excessive drinking. We’re now recognising the impacts it can have on people’s health and well-being.

The legislation supports the Welsh Government’s comprehensive strategy to tackle hazardous and harmful drinking by tackling the availability and affordability of cheap, strong alcohol.

The legislation now moves to the next stage which is a public consultation to agree the minimum price per unit to be initially set.  Welsh Ministers are to set the price later this year.

Likely timescale for legislation being implemented is summer 2019.

If you’re interested in finding out more, or have a few questions, please see the Q&A document, explaining the Act and next steps for implementation.
